RAINEY PASS CHECKPOINT
Honoring - Emily M.Morgan, RN.
When Maria LaFond arrived in Alaska, Jan 27th, 2011, she started researching the Iditarod. Maria found out about all the 20 original mushers that carried the much needed serum to Nome in 1925. What she realized the wasn't any type of recognition for the "Angel of the Yukon" - Miss Emily M. Morgan, RN - the nurse who in sub zero weather walked to homes and inoculated 40 children with the serum that was brought to Nome by dog team. Most Alaskans don't know who she is. She spent 15 of the 42 years she was nursing - in Alaska. And for all that - she got a tiny obituary on the front page of the Anchorage Times when she died in May of 1960. The Anchorage Daily never even mentioned her passing at all.
The late, Dorothy Page stated that she wanted the Iditarod to stay "in touch with the pioneer spirit" (Oct 79 issue of the Iditarod Runner) What better way to do that than to honor Emily Morgan in this years race? Lance Mackey will be doing just that. He will be wearing a patchon his parka honoring Emily Morgan for her dedication to Alaska and for helping save so many lives.
Emily came from Kansas, lived in India, survived Diphtheria herself, served in WWI as a nurse in France, WWII in New Zealand and was instrumental in helping Dr. Curtis Welch diagnose the diphtheria in Nome. She was declared the "Diphtheria Nurse" by the townspeople in Nome before the serum arrived. This humble lady didn't want fame and fortune - she stated she was only "an instrument in the hands of fate".
Lance places 4th overall in the 2011 IPSSSDR
With its unique stage stop format, the IPSSSDR has become a popular mushing event attracting the world’s top competitors. Competing for the first time in the IPSSSDR, Lance Mackey placed 4th overall in the 8 day race, saying "this race was a kick, and I promise you I will be back".The International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race, the largest dog sled race in the lower 48 states, was founded in 1996 by Frank Teasley to make sled dog racing more accessible to the public. Iditarod champion shares cancer story

Dogged determination: Left, Mackey, with MGH Cancer Center patient Margaretha Rerch
Although oct. 22 was a typical autumn day with temperatures in the 60s, patients and staff were magically transported to the frozen Alaskan tundra when four-time Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race winner Lance Mackey paid a visit to the MGH Cancer Center.Mackey holds the record for the most consecutive wins in the famous 1,200-mile race and is the 2007 through 2010 Iditarod champion.
He also is a throat cancer survivor and motivational speaker who spends much of his time visiting cancer centers around the country. By sharing his experiences, Mackey said he feels he is able to give hope to those who are suffering. "When it comes to a tough fight, winning the longest dog sled race in the world is no match for what it takes to beat cancer," said Mackey. Armed with signed copies of his new book for the Maxwell V. Blum Cancer Resource Room, Mackey spent much of his time talking about his dogs and their love of running, even in the harshest conditions possible.
Mackey continues to train with his team of sled dogs and hopes for a fifth consecutive win when the Iditarod begins again in March 2011.
THE FUR RONDY? THE NORTH AMERICAN SLED DOG RACE AND THE WYOMING STAGE STOP SLED DOG RACE? ABSOLUTELY! Yes, the rumors are true. Lance has been tossing around the idea to kick it up a bit this racing season and add some sprint racing to his racing schedule. This is exciting for the kennel and sure to turn the heads of the mushing fans around the world. His plan is to run the Wyoming Stage Stop Race in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the Fur Rondy in Anchorage, Alaska and the North American in Fairbanks, Alaska if everything falls into place. It is something he has always wanted to do and this year he will have a sprint team to train with. Lance is realistic, saying "I'm going to be competitive in sprint racing but I know I have a lot to learn about this style of racing, I just want to have some fun."
To accomplish this, Lance is looking for new sponsorship to cover entry fees and travel expenses. This is a great way to help Mackey's Comeback Kennel in a big way and promote your business - Contact us for details.
